Covering a spacious 90,000 square feet, Arcade Independence Square is far more than your typical shopping mall. The entire complex is housed within beautifully preserved British colonial buildings, primarily the old Jawatta Asylum constructed in 1889. What used to be a somber institutional space has been filled with new life, light, and luxury.

The restoration work, which took nearly two years of precise effort by the Urban Development Authority and the military, kept the original design completely intact. Walk through the arcade and you will see stunning white symmetrical walls, grand arches, and wide outdoor walkways paved with stone.

Located in the upscale neighborhood of Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7), the Colombo Racecourse is a major landmark. Its main feature is the grand, three-story colonial grandstand. This structure showcases iconic Victorian architecture, complete with sweeping white arches, large verandas, and classic columns.
