Over the centuries, the strategic riverside location caused the site to be transformed into a military fort by Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial rulers, temporarily halting public worship. The site was triumphantly reclaimed for Buddhism in the mid-20th century, largely thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Kalutara Bodhi Trust and Sir Cyril de Zoysa.

Directly overlooking the river on the upper terrace stands the magnificent Kalutara Chaitya (completed in 1976). This structure breaks traditional Sri Lankan architectural norms by being entirely hollow. Your exploration begins at Fort Frederick, a historic fortress built by the Portuguese in 1624. Interestingly, the colonists built these thick granite walls using the ruins of an ancient Hindu temple that they had destroyed. Over the centuries, the fort changed hands multiple times, being captured and rebuilt by the Dutch in 1665—who gave it its current shape and named it after Prince Frederick—and later taken over by the British in 1795. Today, the fort is still used as a base by the Sri Lankan military, but visitors are fully welcome to walk through its shady, tree-lined roads. As you wander past old colonial administrative buildings, you will share the path with dozens of gentle, wild spotted deer that are completely comfortable around humans.

As you walk higher along the peninsula on Swami Rock, you reach the breathtaking Koneswaram Temple (also known as the Kovil). This sacred site is one of the five Pancha Ishwarams—five ancient coastal temples built around Sri Lanka to protect the island from natural disasters. Revered for over a thousand years, it was once a massive complex known as the "Temple of a Thousand Pillars" before its colonial destruction. The modern temple, beautifully rebuilt, is a colorful masterpiece of Hindu architecture filled with detailed carvings of deities. At the edge of the cliff stands a towering, majestic golden statue of a seated Lord Shiva looking out over the Bay of Bengal. The temple grounds end at "Lover’s Leap," a dramatic, sheer drop of 400 feet into the crashing ocean waves below, carrying with it tales of romance and history.

Laxapana Falls is an incredible natural wonder that drops a staggering 126 meters (413 feet) in a single, powerful plunge. The waterfall is formed by a mountain river called the Maskeliya Oya, which flows through the hills before joining another stream to help form the famous Kelani River.

The name "Laxapana" has a lot of interesting history behind it. Local stories say the name comes from the Sinhala words Laksha (which means one hundred thousand) and Pahana (which means lamps). People traditionally believed that the massive amount of rushing water could generate enough power to light up a hundred thousand lamps. This turned out to be very true, as the water from these hills now helps power some of Sri Lanka's oldest and most important hydro-electric power stations! Another popular legend says that Lord Buddha stopped by this very waterfall to mend his saffron robes while traveling to the sacred mountain of Adam’s Peak.

To see the waterfall up close, you will take a scenic path that leads down through the jungle. The walk features around 700 concrete steps. While going down is quite easy and fun, climbing back up will definitely give you a good workout! At the bottom, a massive spray of water fills the air like a cool mist, and the water collects into a deep, emerald-colored pool. The views from both the top and the bottom of the falls are absolutely spectacular, framed perfectly by the dramatic peaks of the nearby Seven Virgin Mountains.

Maduru Oya National Park is a vibrant world of rich biodiversity. The landscape is a beautiful mix of tropical dry mixed evergreen forests, open plains, and rocky hills. Because parts of the land were used for traditional shifting farming long ago, vast areas have naturally grown back into tall grasslands. These grasses provide the perfect cover and feeding grounds for the park’s most famous residents: the majestic Sri Lankan elephants.

Around 15% of the park is covered by calm water bodies, which makes it a paradise for over 100 species of birds. You will easily spot colorful painted storks, giant grey pelicans, and majestic sea eagles hunting by the lakeside. On the ground, the forest floor is home to secretive predators like the Sri Lankan leopard and the rare sloth bear. You will also share the road with herds of spotted deer, wild water buffaloes, wild boars, and playful monkeys.

Beyond the rich wildlife, the park holds incredible historical secrets. Deep within the jungle lie ancient Buddhist ruins, decades-old stone statues, and hermitages that date back thousands of years. It is also bordered by Dambana, the traditional homeland of Sri Lanka’s indigenous Vedda community, giving the entire area a deep, spiritual connection to the island's earliest roots.

Mannar Fort is a remarkably well-preserved structure characterized by its classic square-shaped layout and four sturdy bastions at each corner. When the Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1658, they completely rebuilt it in 1696 to match their advanced military architecture. Later, in 1795, the British took control of the fort following the Dutch surrender. Because of these shifts in power, the ruins you see today display a captivating mix of Portuguese origins and heavy Dutch building styles.

The entire fort was built using locally sourced materials, primarily thick limestone blocks, chunks of sea coral, and a small amount of ancient brick. As you step inside the massive ramparts, you will find an open courtyard holding the ruins of several colonial buildings. The most famous structure inside is the old Dutch church. Though its roof has long since collapsed, the church still houses a fascinating collection of large stone tombstones dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Three of the four corner bastions still feature intact guard posts where soldiers once stood watch over the ocean. Today, the site is recognized as an archaeologically protected monument managed by the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka, ensuring its stories survive for future generations.

Weligama is also deeply rooted in cultural traditions; it is one of the last remaining places where you can witness the iconic Sri Lankan stilt fishermen balancing on thin wooden poles in the sea, as well as local women practicing the ancient Portuguese art of Beeralu lace-making. The Yapahuwa archaeological site is an incredible mix of natural defense and human artistry. The fortress is built around a giant granite rock that stands 90 meters above the flat plains. To protect the kingdom, King Buwanekabahu I constructed a clever defense system at the base, featuring two semi-circular moats and thick earthen ramparts to keep invaders away.

The undeniable showpiece of Yapahuwa is its magnificent Ornamental Staircase. This architectural masterpiece consists of steep stone steps built at a sharp 70-degree angle—a strategic design to give the king's army the upper hand during a battle. As you climb, you will pass highly detailed stone carvings of graceful dancers, musicians, and the famous, beautifully sculpted Yapahuwa stone lions.

At the top of this main staircase lies the stone foundation of the ancient Temple of the Tooth Relic. If you are adventurous enough to hike past this point along the rugged, natural path to the very summit, you will find the ruins of a small stupa, an old Bodhi tree shrine, and a rock cave used by meditation monks. At the lower base of the rock, the modern Yapahuwa Rajamaha Viharaya (monastery) sits quietly, featuring a cave temple filled with beautiful statues and colorful frescoes from the later Kandyan kingdom era.

To enter Anuradhapura is to step directly into the foundations of Sri Lankan history. Established in the 4th century BCE, this sprawling urban and monastic marvel served as the glorious center of Theravada Buddhism and royal power for over a millennium. Unlike dead archaeological ruins, Anuradhapura remains a profoundly alive, breathing sanctuary. Here, the landscape is defined by massive, mountain-like dagobas (stupas) that once rivaled the heights of the Egyptian pyramids, rising cleanly above a canopy of ancient trees and extensive, thousands-of-years-old irrigation reservoirs (wewas) engineered by early kings. The city carries an unmistakable air of serene, meditative grandeur. As you wander through its sun-drenched pathways, the scent of burning oil lamps and wild jasmine drifts from active shrines where pilgrims dressed in immaculate white gather to chant and pray. The ground is a treasure trove of early South Asian artistry, littered with beautifully preserved stone steps, intricately carved guard stones, and ancient royal pleasure gardens. Far removed from the rushed pace of modern life, Anuradhapura offers an immersive journey through time, inviting travelers to marvel at unparalleled ancient engineering while absorbing the profound spiritual energy that has sustained the island for millennia.

Located just 10 kilometers northeast of Colombo, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara offers a mesmerizing journey into Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage. The origins of this hallowed site date back to before 500 BCE. According to the ancient chronicle, the Mahavamsa, Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya to settle a dispute between two Naga kings over a jewel-encrusted throne. Following his sermon, the pacified kings offered the throne to the Buddha, which was subsequently enshrined within the original stupa built on this very ground.

Throughout its long history, the temple has survived the rise and fall of empires. It flourished during the Kotte Era but faced severe destruction at the hands of Portuguese colonizers in the 16th century. Rebuilt during the Kandyan Kingdom under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha, the temple saw its most magnificent renaissance in the first half of the 20th century.

What truly sets Kelaniya apart today is its awe-inspiring interior. The walls of the newer temple wings are completely covered in the magnum opus of legendary Sri Lankan artist Solias Mendis.
