The Central Highlands

Bambarakanda is home to Bambarakanda Falls (also known as Bambarakele Falls), which proudly holds the title of the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Formed by the Kuda Oya, a small river branch that flows into the larger Walawe River, the water plunges down a sheer, near-vertical black rock face. Unlike wide, stepped waterfalls, Bambarakanda is an elegant "horsetail" waterfall that looks like a majestic, thin silver ribbon dropping gracefully against a dark mountain backdrop.

Dunhinda Waterfall is widely considered one of the most beautiful and picturesque waterfalls in Sri Lanka. While it may not be the tallest cascade on the island, standing at a height of 64 meters (about 210 feet), it easily makes up for it with its incredible volume and jaw-dropping power. The waterfall is fed by a lively river called the Badulu Oya, which flows right through the Badulla area.

The name "Dunhinda" comes from a beautiful Sinhala word that means "smoke" or "mist." This name is a perfect fit. As the massive volume of water squeezes through a narrow gap between two giant rocks at the top, it plunges violently into a deep pool below. Spanning across 28 hectares of beautifully sculpted land, Hakgala Botanical Garden is arranged in a series of sweeping terraces along the lower slopes of the massive Hakgala Rock. Because of its unique geographic position, the gardens offer stunning, wide-open views across the Uva Valley and the distant mountain ranges of Madulsima and Namunukula.

The design of the garden takes complete advantage of its hilly layout. The lower sections near the main entrance welcome you with a bright burst of color from manicured flower beds, a dedicated bulb garden filled with imported lilies from Japan and Holland, and twin terraced plots of roses. As you climb higher up the stone pathways, the environment shifts seamlessly into a cool, shaded wonderland. This includes rare, foreign flora from temperate zones around the globe alongside precious endemic plants—species that grow nowhere else on Earth—such as the bright scarlet Maha Rath Mal (Rhododendron).

Horton Plains National Park stretches across more than 3,160 hectares of high-altitude tableland. The landscape is beautifully split into two distinct ecosystems: vast, rolling montane grasslands and dense, sub-tropical evergreen cloud forests. Because of its extreme isolation and cold climate, the park has become a sanctuary for plants and animals that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. The trees here grow short and twisted, covered in thick mosses, wild orchids, and lichens that thrive on the constant moisture from the heavy clouds.

As you trek through the loop trail, the scenery changes dramatically around every corner. You will cross crystal-clear streams, walk past calm marshlands, and move between sunlit open plains and dark, mysterious forest tunnels. The park is home to a rich array of wildlife. It is incredibly famous for its friendly herds of Sambar deer, which often graze near the park entrance. It also provides shelter to rare animals like the highland leopard, the purple-faced langur, and over 20 species of birds that are endemic to Sri Lanka. This makes the park a key biodiversity hotspot and a living museum of nature.

Laxapana Falls is an incredible natural wonder that drops a staggering 126 meters (413 feet) in a single, powerful plunge. The waterfall is formed by a mountain river called the Maskeliya Oya, which flows through the hills before joining another stream to help form the famous Kelani River.

The name "Laxapana" has a lot of interesting history behind it. Local stories say the name comes from the Sinhala words Laksha (which means one hundred thousand) and Pahana (which means lamps). People traditionally believed that the massive amount of rushing water could generate enough power to light up a hundred thousand lamps. This turned out to be very true, as the water from these hills now helps power some of Sri Lanka's oldest and most important hydro-electric power stations! Another popular legend says that Lord Buddha stopped by this very waterfall to mend his saffron robes while traveling to the sacred mountain of Adam’s Peak.

To see the waterfall up close, you will take a scenic path that leads down through the jungle. The walk features around 700 concrete steps. While going down is quite easy and fun, climbing back up will definitely give you a good workout! At the bottom, a massive spray of water fills the air like a cool mist, and the water collects into a deep, emerald-colored pool. The views from both the top and the bottom of the falls are absolutely spectacular, framed perfectly by the dramatic peaks of the nearby Seven Virgin Mountains.

The journey to Little Adam’s Peak is just as beautiful as the view from the top. The trailhead starts just a short, 5-minute tuk-tuk ride or a pleasant 20-minute walk from Ella town. The path is very clear and easy to follow, so you will not need to hire a guide.

The first part of the trail is a flat, easy walk that winds smoothly through the lush green fields of a working tea plantation. As you walk further, the trail starts to incline gently. The final stretch consists of a well-maintained set of concrete and stone stairs that lead you right up to the main viewing platforms. In total, the entire walk up and down takes about 1 to 1.5 hours of moving time. At the summit, you are treated to a magnificent 360-degree view of the famous Ella Gap, the towering cliffs of Ella Rock, and the deep valleys below. It is a peaceful, stunning place where you can easily sit, relax, and watch the mountain mist roll past.

The Maskeliya Reservoir is primarily fed by the Maskeliya Oya (river) and was formed by the construction of the massive Maussakelle Dam. Serving as a crucial component of Sri Lanka's Laxapana Hydropower Complex, the reservoir holds an immense volume of water that is funneled through underground tunnels to generate electricity. However, its industrial purpose is entirely masked by its sheer scenic beauty.

Ravana Falls is a striking multi-tiered cascade that measures approximately 25 meters (82 feet) in total height. It is widely recognized as one of the widest waterfalls on the island. The waters originate from a tributary of the Kirindi Oya River and flow down a dramatic, concave rock outcrop that has been smoothly hollowed out by centuries of constant water flow. During the rainy season, the waterfall swells dramatically, creating a wide, roaring torrent. Locals often say that when the water is at full volume, the shape of the cascade looks exactly like an open areca flower with drooping, delicate petals. What makes Ravana Falls incredibly popular compared to other hidden gems in Sri Lanka is its unbeatable accessibility. It sits right alongside the well-traveled Wellawaya-Ella-Kumbalwela Highway. You do not need to embark on a grueling multi-hour trek to see it; you can easily admire its full height right from the edge of the road bridge. Below the main viewing points, a natural pool collects the rushing water. The area surrounding the falls is buzzing with life. You will find small local vendors selling fresh tropical fruits, sweet roasted corn, and unique stone trinkets. The Seetha Amman Temple (also known as the Seetha Amman Kovil) is a beautifully crafted Hindu shrine built in the traditional South Indian architectural style.
