Okanda Beach is characterized by its dramatic, wild topography. The shoreline features a wide stretch of golden-brown sand flanked by massive, weather-worn rock outcrops. The most iconic feature of the beach is its giant rock headland, which acts as a natural barrier and shapes the ocean currents, forming a legendary right-hand point break that is highly revered by intermediate and advanced surfers. A unique, flat slab of rock sits right near the water's edge, featuring a central crevice that acts like a natural blowhole, spectacularly spewing sea spray into the air when the swells roll in.

Because of its geographical isolation—lying roughly 40 kilometers south of the popular surf town of Arugam Bay—the beach remains entirely undeveloped. Instead, the backdrop consists of coastal scrub, local fishermen tending to their boats, and the historic Okanda Murugan Temple (Okanda Kataragama Devalaya) sitting quietly near the entrance. Yala National Park (also known as Ruhuna) represents the untamed, dramatic edge of tropical Asia.
