Covering a spacious 90,000 square feet, Arcade Independence Square is far more than your typical shopping mall. The entire complex is housed within beautifully preserved British colonial buildings, primarily the old Jawatta Asylum constructed in 1889. Located in the upscale neighborhood of Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7), the Colombo Racecourse is a major landmark. Its main feature is the grand, three-story colonial grandstand. This structure showcases iconic Victorian architecture, complete with sweeping white arches, large verandas, and classic columns.

The ground floor and pavilions have been converted into an open-air shopping mall and dining district, housing popular global fast-food chains, local clothing brands, electronic showrooms, and cozy coffee shops. Right in front of the grandstand lies a massive, pristine green field. While its historical name evokes lush scenery, its true modern fame lies in its status as Colombo's official "Art Street." Every weekend, the sidewalks come alive as talented local street artists and woodworkers set up an incredible open-air market.
