Hikkaduwa is a beautiful, energetic coastal town situated in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The main attraction is its gorgeous 4-kilometer stretch of beach, which is divided into distinct zones to suit every kind of traveler. The northern part of the beach features a calm, shallow lagoon protected by a natural breakwater formed by the coral reef. This shallow fringing reef is the core of the Hikkaduwa Marine National Park, one of the few marine sanctuaries in the country. It hosts around 60 species of hard corals—including massive brain corals and table corals—along with more than 170 species of colorful tropical reef fish like angel fish, parrot fish, and butterfly fish.

The most iconic feature of the beach is its giant rock headland, which acts as a natural barrier and shapes the ocean currents, forming a legendary right-hand point break that is highly revered by intermediate and advanced surfers. A unique, flat slab of rock sits right near the water's edge, featuring a central crevice that acts like a natural blowhole, spectacularly spewing sea spray into the air when the swells roll in.

Because of its geographical isolation—lying roughly 40 kilometers south of the popular surf town of Arugam Bay—the beach remains entirely undeveloped. There are no large luxury hotels, commercial beach bars, or bustling rows of shops here. Instead, the backdrop consists of coastal scrub, local fishermen tending to their boats, and the historic Okanda Murugan Temple (Okanda Kataragama Devalaya) sitting quietly near the entrance. The ocean water is beautifully clean and warm, but it demands respect; the powerful waves and strong rip currents mean that swimming out into the open sea is highly dangerous, especially since there are no active lifeguards on duty.
